The Job Search

While I do love the picture of Ty Rogers from Western Kentucky, and just got a joy out of it leading off the blog. I think it is time to post again. Western Kentucky has of course gone on to the Sweet 16, but is facing UCLA, who I have in the finals, so I hope there will be no more photos. If they do win however, I promise another Ty Rogers or Western Kentucky picture. (For those who want to know, Western Kentucky is in Bowling Green, KY which is almost where Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky meet up. Geography lesson of the day.)

But onto the new post.....as y'all know I moved out West without a job. With savings, tax returns, and other sources, we have been doing ok, but money has never been the point. One of the key reasons for the move was to make the transition to my true passion of features and move away from the advertising world, which while great in its own accord was just not for me. So far things have been going alright......I had an interview a few weeks ago, which I am still waiting to hear back from and had an amazing (informational) interview on Thursday. I say informational because the company doesn't have any openings at the moment, but if awarded some projects will have need and has mentioned they would like to bring me aboard.

As you know, I don't like to mention company names because I hate talking about the stigma of some companies I am going after and also don't want any blowback from all of the confidentiality agreements that I sign.

When I came out west, my goal was to have a job by the beginning of April. I figured that I would be networking everyday, going on a few interviews a week and things would fly together. Now I am getting a better sense for the pace. The feature world seems to move slower than I am use to. In advertising, you had two weeks for a project (if lucky) and you need to be staffed up immediately, and job postings were filled as quick as can be. With features, the projects take months and years, not weeks and so there is more time to make sure the position is filled properly and with the right candidate.

So while I have only been on two interviews, I do feel things opening up. Just this week, I received a call from another company that is looking to bring people on, I have another informational interview next week with a B-List company. (Work is still work) and have just recently made ins with at least three more top shelf companies. So while I now am ready to acknowledge I most likely won't have a job by April 1st, things are definitely moving forward.

So there we go....it's partially a waiting game and this point, and always a networking game. It's who you know as the adage goes, and my network is increasing by the day. So wish me all the best, I will of course let you know when something becomes official and as always, I will blog with you later.
